Also apparently, "Styrofoam" seems to be used as a generic term for Polystyrene unfortunately. The packaging industry makes the difference between "Expanded Polystyrene" which is the common type of packaging with lots of little white blobs compacted together and not suitable for cutting and shaping as it falls apart pretty easily. "Extruded Polystyrene" is what you're after. However, I couldn't tell you where to get any as I'm trying to find some myself here in the UK...
[s:36] Excellent backround!!!
I have a questions, you say that this material are more strong that the polystyren, well in here the polystyren is a material so hard to working with this one, I don't sure if are differente presentations about this but I jus know the made into big plate (just like the big carton paper) and this is so hard to cut or model, did you have another name or maby another material to do it.... At the begging I think that this backround has made with a kind of unisel (I don't sure that this is the rigth name)..... Well thats my question. I hope don't disturb you....

Yep Axolotl, to cut extruded polystyren a cutter or a knife is enough. For stone fell, 1st step is to put black paint, after you use grey paint, and after you brush than you get the stone effect. It's hard to explain , i'll ask rudy to get more exlain, here yo ucan see his last work, it's a background based on meikai with lava effect:
