The Eiga.com news website reported on Friday that a Hollywood live-action film based on [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya manga has been green-lit. [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Toei Animation and Chinese distribution company A Really Good Film Company (ARGF) are co-producing the film.

Polish director Tomasz Bagiński, who previously directed the Academy Award-nominated short animation "Katedra," is directing the film. Toei Animation's [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Yoshiyuki Ikezawa and [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Kozo Morishita will serve as producer and executive producer, respectively.

The story follows Seiya, a mortal who has trained to earn the sacred cloth of Pegasus. He joins the Saints, a group of fighters who must defend the universe and the reincarnation of the goddess Athena.

Kurumada published the original [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Saint Seiya manga from 1986 to 1990. The manga has inspired a number of television anime, OVAs, anime films, and spinoff manga. The original series has 35 million copies in print. The [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō spinoff manga has an anime in the works.

[color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]Viz Media published the original manga in English under the title Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac. [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]ADV Films released Toei Animation's anime adaptation with an English [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]dub under the title Knights of the Zodiac, and later released it unedited under the title Saint Seiya. [color=rgb(0, 80, 0) !important]New Video Group later also released the series on DVD.

［映画.com ニュース］車田正美氏による人気漫画「聖闘士星矢」が、米ハリウッドで実写映画化されることが発表された。車田氏は「30年以上の長きに渡り、『星矢』を愛してきてくれたファンの皆様、そして新たなる世代のために……。全世界に向けた『星矢』のかつてないプロジェクトを贈ります。ぜひ、ご期待ください」とコメントを寄せている。

「聖闘士星矢」は、“聖闘士（セイント）”と呼ばれる戦士たちが、それぞれ選ばれし星座の防具“聖衣（クロス）”をまとい、現代に生まれ変わった女神アテナを守るために戦う人気シリーズ。1985～90年に「週刊少年ジャンプ」で連載された原作は、ギリシア神話をモチーフにした物語と設定が人気を博し、累計発行部数は3500万部を突破した。また東映アニメーションによるアニメ版は、これまで250話以上のTVシリーズと6本の劇場版が製作され、世界80以上の国と地域で放送および上映。その総売上は11億ドルを超えている。

今回のハリウッド実写化は、東映アニメーションと、映画「続・深夜食堂」など東映関連作品の中国配給を手がけるA Really Good Film Company Limited（以下、ARGF）が開発・共同製作を担当。監督はナイキやFIFAなどのCMを手がけたビジュアル・アーティストであり、ショートアニメ「Katedra（原題）」（2002）では第75回米アカデミー賞にノミネートされたポーランドの新星トメック・バギンスキーが務め、プロデューサーには東映アニメーションの池澤良幸氏、製作総指揮には同社会長の森下孝三氏らが名を連ねている。

アニメ版「聖闘士星矢」初代シリーズの監督・プロデューサーを務めた森下氏は、「『聖闘士星矢』は長きに渡って世界中のファンから愛され続けてきたアニメーション作品だ」としたうえで、「今回ARGFとタッグを組み、この作品を世界中の観客に提供できることにとても興奮している。これをきっかけに、当社の他作品もあとを続けるよう期待している」と明かしている。
